Ah, the MacKenzie Poltergeist! Always loved that story.

As for the first break-in from 1998 by the homeless person and them falling into a plague victim dumping site: There is photographic evidence to that story!

A group of ghost hunters called "UK Paranormal" had the chance to enter the mausoleum and take photos. This must have been before the incident with the boys, as the article doesn't mention it and I remember seeing a Youtube video where the plague pit was covered up with a huge board and Mackenzie's coffin itself was heavily damaged. I can't find that video anymore sadly, but the report from the ghost hunters and the pictures can still be found here:

The language in that piece is atrocious. Tramp? Yikes... It also appears to have been co-written by Anderson, who I mention in my essay above. It may well be that someone entered the tomb and caused damage, I've certainly not said this didn't happen, just that the accounts sound extremely fictional.

Yes, the language isn't the best. A product of its time, I guess.

From the wording of "about five years previously" we can place the date of the report (just the first "research" bit is from Anderson) in 2003/04 if the break-in happened in 1998/99.

The story of a groundskeeper or whoever being surprised by the person entering the tomb seems unlikely to me as well.

But the entry itself and the events that happened inside? That's where I say "Yeah, that's possible" because it's just so freakish you can't make it up.

As the tomb is generally not accessible to the public, even during tours, the breaking and entering plus attempted graverobbing becomes more possible. Because why would the City of the Dead Tours incriminate themselves by damaging the coffins and burial chamber when the public can't see them?

However I agree that the people making the tours knew how to capitalize on the story. All the attacks and stuff I don't believe one bit. Pure sensationalism, as you say.
