This is a very thoughtful and important piece of writing. Leave people steadier than you found them – that's what to aim for indeed!

Great writing!

Do you have any cases where your investigation has been able to assist the family to a happy conclusion?

Although they don't guarantee a tale widely told, you will be forever remembered by those you have helped, and that's a better result to my mind.

Thank you! I’m quite selective in what cases I’ll become involved with as I am aware of the ethical implications - I try to stick to places which are not home, where there are no children involved.

In my honest opinion, the social media "paranormal investigator" has done nothing but hinder true and serious documentation into the subject. Everyone wants their five minutes of fame, all claiming they have discovered buildings practically chock full of "demons" and the like, if you're not wandering around a dark and "creepy" place that your flashy title has claimed some silly nonsense that has to always include the words "Most Evil" etc etc then nobody is interested. People watch for a quick scare, to be entertained (which is all good and well if that's what your video is, entertainment which should be titled as such), and yet it's deemed as "totally real", "world's most haunted", the list goes on....Real, genuine people are overlooked, deemed fake, boring, not "entertaining enough". Give someone a very real and unexplainable voice recording and they'd assume it wasn't real, show someone a video where you claim a "demon" lives and they'd watch, quicker than you can say the word boo. And let's not forget, if you're not using some flashy new "best gadget ever" for "paranormal hunting", people aren't interested, same with all the apps out there, now, I'm not saying that they can't work, nobody, and I mean nobody knows just how or why or in what ways communication from unseen (most of the time) presence's happens, nobody knows what (potentially) those beings/energies/spirits can and can't do, but the point is is, these p who use the apps don't use them in a controlled and experimental manner, they're never tested thoroughly, never tested continuously. The moment an "answer" comes through it's taken as "pure and undeniable proof", especially if a name pops up, I can hear the "oh my goshes" from here...they then usually run their narrative around the supposed person with said name, if other words pop out that aren't correct or don't fit (according to the "ghost hunter") then the apps apparent and untested responses are ignored because they don't fit the narrative. I've seen it time and time again and it's one of the main reasons I don't watch any "expert ghost hunters", be they on TV or social media, they do absolutely nothing to help the strange and unusual phenomena that can occur, be that voices, apparitions etc etc. There are those (who's work I do follow), who continually strive, experiment and document their findings in a serious, not out for five minutes of fame way, as I said though, these people are overlooked and ignored, deemed boring or "not an expert", "not a proper paranormal investigator", which is laughable. These people do nothing but try and prove that something else exists, with pure intentions and never out for five minutes of fame. Most I know of have stopped experimenting, because they know that in the end, no matter what real and unexplainable documentation they put out there, because ultimately nobody will believe in what they have tried to show. Lastly, cases like Enfield (which, as far as I'm aware) started off as genuine and ultimately wasn't, should be thoroughly and scientifically experimented in a controlled and lengthy process, they should not be sprawled all over TV or the Internet just so some "real expert crew" can be deemed as the "greatest paranormal investigator/team of all time". Also, don't you find it odd that suddenly there's a whole host of "the world's most evil and haunted building" all over the place, each with their own resident "demon" or five, oh and let's not forget those "investigators" who claim to have been "followed home", "have an attachment" etc etc blah blah blah...And you know that most of these people have their own resident "medium" who can "cross some poor lost soul over" 🤣 🙄. One more thing though, these are merely my thoughts, I myself practice, experiment and document E.V.P communication, I'll never claim to be an "expert", I record unexplainable voices quite often, using static as a background aid, they're all recorded in my home, would I then say my house is haunted? (Not a term I use mind) but if we're going off of other peoples opinions on what makes a house "haunted", then I suppose mine is, figures have been seen, footsteps, knocks, smells, taps, bangs, shadows, a door has opened three times on its own and I've recorded hundreds of unexplainable communication...be that a sentence or a few words. I'm honoured to have been able to do so and to have experienced all the things I have and the things I continue to, it truly is such a fascinating phenomena, it's a shame those on social media and TV don't see it the same way.

I’m always horrified when I read about past cases that involve children. I very much doubt whether an Enfield Poltergeist case could occur again without medical professionals and children’s services shutting it down immediately - and quite rightly too when it comes to safeguarding the kids. Does the SPR or any other such organisation have any protocol’s about CRB checking? I assume anyone attached to a university will have been CRB checked?

I’d argue that there are plenty of cases just like Enfield that still happen they just haven’t received the same publicity. It’s not uncommon for ghost hunters to become involved in cases involving potentially vulnerable children and adults.

Every now and again I do hear whispers about spectacular new cases, and then nothing more. I suppose I’m being a little bit too cynical in thinking that most investigators are chasing book deals as well as ghosts. I guess there’s some great work being done out there on the quiet, we just won’t hear about it until years down the line.
