Excellent article. As someone who is open-minded about "ghosts" and the paranormal, but sceptical regarding orbs, this has flagged up their cultural significance beautifully. A concept I hadn't considered.

Thanks for commenting, Nic. Many years ago I’d get a little frustrated at all the orb photos I saw, then I sat back and thought about how when I was a young ghost hunter what it used to feel like when I got one on camera. Rationally you know what it probably is, right, but there’s a moment where you’re like “validation? Is that you?”

I'm not sure I consider them "validation" tbh. There are photographic images or oddities which I have observed which have felt more "real" in terms of something I can't explain by normal means...I have taken photos with a number of different types of camera over the last 50+ years, most glitches/artefacts can be explained...but...there have been some which I just could not work out..

Weirdly, ghost globes don't seem to feature very often but when they do...perhaps I should re-appraise my ideas...🤔

I don’t think they’re validation anymore but when I was younger and believed in ghosts I did due to confirmation bias

Brilliant analysis. I so appreciate your insightful content and engaging writing. As promised, I've assigned several of your pieces in my undergraduate seminar and the students are big fans! 😊

I happened upon Ball Lightening in my youth deep in the Northern California mountains. Similar I would posit?
